OUR CURRICULUM

We teach a balanced curriculum encompassing the Common Core State Standards, the standards put in place by ODE, and Montessori guidelines. Our desire is to create culturally informed students who have a hunger to learn and a curiosity about the world around them. We provide a respectful and peaceful environment where children can explore free choice as well as responsibilities involved in the Montessori curriculum. The Elementary experience is only limited to the child’s imagination.

Students at the Elementary level engage in individual work as well as collaborative activities in both small and larger groups. Mathematics, Language Arts, and Cultural Studies (History, Geography, Botany, Zoology, and Physical Science) represent the major areas of study, along with Music, Art, Dance, Theater, Emotional Intelligence, Second Language, and Physical Education.

Our Elementary program introduces the Five Great Lessons as scientific explanations of the history of the universe, Earth, and humans. We focus on language (spelling, reading comprehension, and accuracy) in greater depth than at the Primary level. Math begins as concrete concepts and develops into abstract work as the students progress. Cultural studies include physical geography and map interpretation, studies of people, and biomes. Physical education may include yoga, gymnastics, motor skills, cognitive concepts, and personal and social character traits. Emotional Intelligence will focus on teaching emotional skills, self-regulation, self-care, and social skills.

We introduce time management, organization, and setting reasonable, responsible goals. Studies encompassing group projects and the use of community resources, such as libraries, online resources, and field studies become important elements in the Elementary curriculum. Our students begin with concrete presentations and move towards greater depth, detail, and abstract understanding.
